Л-6МIn the 1990s a group of gifted aviation enthusiasts from the city of Samara designed and built the L-6 flying boat. Inspired by this success, in 1999 they founded AeroVolga joint stock company and developed in a short time the L-6m 6-seat amphibian. It took only a year to make the way from a design proposal to completion of the first operable example. The L-6m is virtually a new aircraft, much differing from its predecessor. Using its own industrial base for assembly of experimental aircraft, the company has mastered and streamlined technologies on making all parts in the air-frame. Now it is possible to produce aircraft in small batches.

The new amphibian shows high flight performance. Its major strengths are low takeoff and landing speeds for the given weight with flight safety issues observed; short takeoff distance; the ability to maintain a level flight with one engine out; the ability to land with both engines inoperable;

use of automobile petrol; ease of handing, simplicity of training and relatively low price.

The power plant consists of two 165-hp VAZ RPD-416 rotor-pistons, converted from car engines. These proved reliable, featuring no vibration, stable temperatures and bearable noise levels, and hourly fuel flow of 25 liters.

The cockpit, passenger cabin and cargo bay are specious, with good ventilation, heating and field of view. The undercarriage is three-point, with a retractable tail wheel. The L-6m is

strongly built, with the fuselage providing high safety for the pilots and passengers. Its glass-fiber panels are easy to repair. In the case of hitting a submerged wood trunk at a speed of 80 km/h, there is no a direct shell-hole; repair should normally take four hours.

There are many applications for the L-6m. Patrolling, medical evacuation, express delivery of cargoes, tourism, initial pilot training etc. The airplane has performed several long-distance flights, up to 2,000 km. It often flew in heavy weather conditions, carrying a maximum payload. The airplane’s onboard avionics set permits flights not only within the direct vision of the ground surface.

This year we participated in the MAKS’2001 international air show, to where we traveled by air. The 1,350-km flight from Samara to Zhukovsky with a stopover in Nizhny Novgorod lasted 7 hours. We had a busy time at the show as many visitors, including potential buyers, expressed an interest in our aircraft. In our turn, we have decided to improve the existing design. Using 175 hp Subaru EJ-25 engine is being considered, along with improvements in the manufacturing technologies and ergonomics. Also under consideration is a version with a nose gear.
